Today's Pick: Thomson's Science Watch ranks nations' research

Thomson Scientific study ranks countries by volume of research output and research influence

Information solutions provider Thomson Scientific, US, part of Thomson Corporation, has announced the results of a study which ranks nations based on the largest number of elite papers produced over the last decade.

The May/June issue of Thomson Scientifics’ subscription newsletter Science Watch ranks 13 countries based on both the volume and percentage of published scientific papers that reached the top one per cent of most-cited papers worldwide.

With more than 2.9 million published papers, the United States took the lead in both the total papers among the top one per cent, and the percentage of total papers among the top one per cent. Japan ranked second with about one-third of the United States’ publication output. England also had a profound influence by placing second highest in both total number of papers and percentage of papers among the top one per cent by having published nearly one-fourth of the United States’ total papers.
