Today's Pick: Newman's Example

Paul Newman - Newman's Own

Before I knew Paul Newman was an actor, I knew he made food products, and I couldn’t understand why my mother thought the guy on the salad dressing bottle was so handsome.

In a piece in the Wall Street Journal, John Whitehead and Peter Malkin of the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy celebrate Newman’s accomplishments in the area of corporate social responsibility.

Newman embodied “the belief that corporate America could be a force for good in society,” donating all proceeds from the Newman’s Own company to charity, founding the Hole in the Wall Camps for children with serious illnesses, and making organics mainstream.

As the line between public and private sectors continues to blur, Whitehead and Malkin pay an important tribute to a pioneering social entrepreneur.
