cibc presents entrepreneurship 101

At last week’s CIBC Presents Entrepreneurship 101 lecture, attendees heard Arshia Tabrizi of Tabrizi Law Office speak about the various forms of intellectual property and how they can be commercially exploited.

The degree of active questioning after the talk brings a question to my mind that I’d like to pose to the larger Entrepreneurship 101 audience: when you started your current job (whether as a graduate student, post-doc, hospital researcher/ staff or at a company) did anyone formally sit down with you to explain the importance of taking steps to protect any intellectual property you might create? For those of you in academic/hospital roles do you think that would be appropriate? I’d love to hear comments.

I am currently a graduate student at U of T and I must say that I don’t remember anyone giving me particular information about intellectual property when I started here. It is a great contrast with my previous experience in industry, at Boehringer Ingelheim, where all newcomers we briefed on the importance of confidentiality and keeping our work in good order in case something patentable came out of it.
I think U of T should give basic training to students and faculty on intellectual preperty and everything relating to that.

Interesting, we find this an awful lot when we visit companies. There is no set process to deal with this only the old faithful lab notebook, which has been used since god was a lad. But what seems to have been forgotten is WHY you are supposed to produce these.

We are thought leaders in this market and at Amphora we have the direct electronic replacement to the BLN – PatentSafe, which I am not here to sell. But do you think that something like this would work here at the Mars center overall? As this is a thought for an upcoming Canada trip we have.

What are your thoughts would people like to have an electronic, IP system?
