Two ways you can help shape Canada’s digital media industry
We previously wrote about 49 Pixel’s project to help us understand the digital media industry in Canada. The Pixel to Product survey uses a mix of techniques to capture data, including web and face-to-face interviews.
Since the launch of the survey, the project’s host, Justin Kozuch, has been documenting his learnings and even posting some early data. How can you help in his initiative? We’ve got two ways.
1. Fill out the survey
Justin believes we don’t have a thorough understanding of the size and scope of our industry. Specifically, we don’t understand the number of employees, location or revenue of digital media services in Canada. What also is not clear or readily available is the data around the working habits, salaries and skills of producers of digital media content.
By June 2011, they intend to deliver:
- A report highlighting industry insights and findings
- A self-published e-book of blog posts generated during the research study
- A report outlining the needs and trends of the buyers of digital media services
- Access to the raw, anonymized data sets in a variety of open data formats
But they need people like you in the digital media industry to fill out that survey first. At MaRS, we’re encouraging all our IT, communications and entertainment (ICE) client companies to get involved and take the survey to ensure digital media start-ups have an input.
2. Get your hands on what they’ve got
In the meantime, they’ve released the first in a series of open data sets, including:
- Job titles
- Salaries
- Locations
- Education
You can download the data catalogue here. Get it. Analyze it. Make some sense about it. Then write about it. It can only help them spread the word and get us all some better data on our digital media sector here in Canada.
Bonus: 3. Learn more
What the heck? If you’ve gotten this far, here’s another thing you can do: get more information on the project and spread it around. To find out more:
