Pick of the week: Women + science

Women in science

The centenary of International Women’s Day is being marked around the world today by many different organizations and in many different ways.

However, the Canada Foundation of Innovation is celebrating the occasion with some content that speaks particularly to MaRS and its mission.  CFI has just released a video, Women + Science, that offers a personal take on the rewards and challenges of being a “women in science”.

Five accomplished researchers, ranging from UofT’s Dr. Molly Shoichet to ethnic musicologist Charity March, offer candid and sometimes humourous insights on their formative experiences, work/life balance and their assessment of how far women have come in research in Canada.

They also discuss what women bring to the scientific process and what needs to be done to attract more females into research careers.  The video is currently available on YouTube but is available on the CFI’s own InnovationCanada website as well.  Wouldn’t it be nice if International Women’s Day celebrates its 110th anniversary with no need for this kind of video?
