Top technology buys for 2011
What do Canadians love the most when it comes to technology? We’ve compiled the latest facts and figures to make your last-minute holiday shopping a breeze!

Smartphones
Did you know that in 2011, a whopping one third of Canadians planned to buy a mobile phone? Why not surprise your special someone with a gleaming new smartphone (if he or she hasn’t bought one already)?
In Canada, the most popular smartphone is the BlackBerry, with over 35% market share. The iPhone comes in second, having captured 30% of the Canadian market. And Android-based smartphones, including Samsung, LG and HTC, are on the rise with a combined 25% of the market.
Tablets
With only 5% of Canadians owning a tablet, this gift is sure to get your loved one’s attention. Go for a sleek new Apple iPad, the leader in tablet sales.
And while you’re at it, make sure to load it up with games, social networking and finance apps because this is what Canadians are downloading the most.
PCs
Canadians love their PCs, particularly laptops. So why not spoil that special someone with a hot new HP device, the leading brand in Canada with a 25% market share. Next in line is Acer, followed by Dell. Surprisingly, while many may love their Apple computer, the company has garnered a mere 12% of the Canadian market in this sector.
Cameras
The price of cameras in Canada dropped significantly over the past year, so now is the time to buy! Point and shoot models are still the most popular, representing 85% of the camera market. Canon is leading the pack with a 31% market share. Next in line is Sony (14%), Fujifilm (12%), Nikon and Kodak (10%).
Gaming Consoles
Looking to get your teen a new gaming console? Sadly, the days of Atari are over. The Nintendo Wii is now the hottest ticket in North America, with ‘Just Dance’ trending as the #1 game on Amazon.
If your special someone is lucky enough to already own a Wii, try out an Xbox 360 or PlayStation®3 – the next most popular devices.
eReaders
If you’re shopping for a bookworm, then the perfect gift this holiday season is an eReader. While many use a media tablet to read books and magazines, they won’t be able to fully experience the ease and comfort offered by an eReader. In Canada, the former underdog, Kobo, is now on top with over a 30% market share. Next in line is Amazon’s Kindle, followed by Sony’s Reader™.

TVs
2011 was marked by the CRTC phasing out analog television broadcasting, so what better time than now to purchase a new TV? In Canada, LCD is the leading digital technology, with Samsung boasting a 35% market share. LG (19%), Sony (16%) and Panasonic aren’t far behind (11%).
The next major innovation in the television pipeline is the Ultra HD, which will offer up to 16 times the resolution of traditional HD!
