Hot spots in ICT and energy for 2012

On February 13, MaRS Market Intelligence presented Technology Predictions for 2012 in the ICT and energy sectors, with IDC analysts Tony Olvet (ICT), Group Vice President, Research, and Marcus Torchia (energy), Research Manager, Intelligent Grid Strategies. Tony and Marcus examined how the prevailing trends in ICT and energy are defining the current marketplace and what these trends mean for the year ahead.

ICT sector

With a wave of innovation in digital technologies and shifts in media consumption habits, successful business strategies require insights into not only the current environment, but also the trends that will shape the future.

The following are the top three predictions for 2012 from Tony Olvet in the ICT sector:

  1. Mobile devices will boost Canada’s ICT growth
  2. Pure play offshore IT outsourcing vendors will break $1 billion
  3. Nearly 50% of growth in application software will be cloud-based

Energy/cleantech sector

With the increase in public, government and industry awareness of issues concerning the environment, commercializing clean technologies is a profitable enterprise that is moving steadily into mainstream business. The key trends over the next 12–18 months will likely have significant medium to long–term impacts on companies.

The following are the top three predictions for 2012 from Marcus Torchia in the energy/cleantech sector:

  1. Smart meter deployment will continue to grow through 2015, propelling demand response
  2. Distribution automation will lead smart grid control investments, with 13% compound annual growth rate (CAGR)
  3. Smart building technology investments will gain more traction with utilities
