Information Officer / Economist

BIOTECanada, the national association representing Canada’s biotechnology industry, seeks a full-time Information Officer or Economist for a fast-paced position located in Ottawa. With over 215 member companies, BIOTECanada works with high-tech life-sciences companies, knowledge and service providers, and universities to enhance the Canadian environment for the development of biotech products across the human health, agricultural, industrial and environmental sectors.

The successful candidate will work in a policy-driven environment. S/he must enjoy interactions with government, industry and public stakeholders and have a keen interest in data research and modeling. The general responsibilities for the position include: conducting analysis and industry performance data tracking, developing the economic and quantitative background support for the policy, program, legislative/regulatory initiatives developed by Association committees, and preparing industry statistical reports or supporting theoretical and evidential arguments for internal and external use. The position reports to the President.

Necessary skills for this position include:
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills,
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to independently manage and prioritize several assignments at one time, while ensuring delivery within specific deadlines and budgets,
  • Strong analytical capability with excellent attention to detail,
  • Ability to carry out complex and in-depth statistical and qualitative studies including ability to generate reports and presentations from varied data sources,
  • Ability to develop, interpret and evaluate public policy.
Understanding of and ability to run economic models to determine effects as well as a background in economic or policy issues would be an asset. Fluency in English is essential and French is desirable.
