The Ontario Genomics Institute (OGI) was established in 2000 as a non-profit corporation focused on using world-class research to create strategic genomics resources and accelerate Ontario’s development of a globally-competitive life sciences sector.
OGI, one of six genome centres across Canada, is part of the new MaRS Discovery District, serving the innovation pipeline in Ontario. Working with Genome Canada, Ontario’s Ministry of Research and Innovation (MRI), and other private and public sector partners, OGI currently oversees an almost $600 million portfolio of leading-edge genomics and proteomics research projects including a world-class technology platform at The Centre for Applied Genomics (TCAG) based in Toronto. Many of the projects OGI manages are multi-institutional and multi-national, and we are focused on involving international funding sources and collaborators, and increasing the visibility of Ontario for the international life sciences sector.
OGI's three major roles are:
- attract investment for internationally recognized genomics-based or genomics-derived research that is of strategic importance to Ontario and all of Canada;
- accelerate the impact of genomics resources created through research to increase business development in Ontario, in Canada, and internationally;
- increase public awareness of genomics and its impact on society through education, dialogue on social and ethical issues, and public outreach programs.
