The Ontario Genomics Institute (OGI) was established in 2000 as a non-profit corporation with a mission to provide leadership for Ontario in helping build a globally-competitive life sciences sector in Ontario by creating leverageable genomics resources with top-notch research. 

OGI, one of six genome centres across Canada, is part of the new MaRS Discovery District, serving the innovation pipeline in Ontario.  Working with Genome Canada, Ontario’s Ministry of Research and Innovation (MRI), and other private and public sector partners, OGI currently oversees an almost $600 million portfolio of 33 leading-edge genomics and proteomics research projects including a world-class technology platform at The Centre for Applied Genomics (TCAG) based in Toronto.

Ontario-led international projects, an important part of OGI’s portfolio, are underway through: a Genome Canada-Genoma España initiative;  the Structural Genomics Consortium (SGC), a shared research initiative at the Universities of Oxford, Toronto and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden; and the International Regulome Consortium (IRC), which includes scientists from Australia, Britain, Canada, France, the Netherlands, Singapore, and the U.S.

OGI's three major roles are:
  • to identify, attract and support investment in Ontario’s genomics research;
  • to catalyze access to and impact of genomics capacity and resources created; and
  • to raise visibility of genomics as well as its impact and associated issues, and to increase the visibility of Ontario on the international playing field.

Job Description

  • Reporting to the Vice President, Finance & Operations, the position’s primary responsibilities are in the areas of financial monitoring of funded projects, monitoring compliance to financial terms of funding agreements, provision of financial advisory services to OGI’s research program management team, and, the provision of other financial and accounting support activities. 

Accountable to:

  • Functionally accountable to and supervised by the Vice President, Finance & Operations

Role and Responsibilities

  • Provide financial support to OGI’s program management team;
  • Review quarterly financial submissions to ensure that reporting is timely and accurate;
  • Provide assistance in development and maintenance of project budgets;
  • Work with the  program management team to ensure the timely distribution of funds and improve financial reporting processes;
  • Review financial data of project submissions/revisions and provide observations and analysis to program staff;
  • Produce financial reports on a quarterly basis and ad hoc reports and analyses as may be required from time to time

Qualifications

  • Accounting Designation
  • Candidates working toward an accounting designation and/or with demonstrated equivalent experience in progressively increasing financial roles will also be considered
  • 3-5 years accounting experience
  • Experience in forecasting, variance analysis and budgeting
  • Experience in a grant funded or funding environment would be an asset  preferably in a research focused environment
  • Competency using MS-Office & Quickbooks
  • Strong interpersonal skills
