Dr. Ilse Treurnicht CEO
Ilse Treurnicht is the CEO of the MaRS Discovery District. She joined MaRS from her role as President & CEO of Primaxis Technology Ventures, a start up stage venture capital fund focused on the advanced technologies sector. Prior to Primaxis, Ilse was an entrepreneur with senior management roles in a number of emerging technology companies. She serves on a number of Boards, including the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIAR), BIOTECanada, the Canadian Venture Capital Association (CVCA), and is a member of ORIC (Ontario Research and Innovation Council). Ilse holds a DPhil in chemistry from Oxford University, which she attended as a Rhodes Scholar.
Heather Nicol CFO
Heather oversees the finance and administration functions at MaRS, including financial planning and reporting, as well as corporate administration.
Prior to joining MaRS, Heather Nicol was EVP and CFO of an investment company specializing in pharmaceutical royalties, where she helped raise a co-investor fund. Before that, she was the CFO of Chapters Online, taking it public and growing the business. Heather has worked for major Canadian and international investment banks gaining experience in debt and equity financing, as well as structured finance. She has also worked as a senior advisor to Canadian Tire Corporation and restructured the financing of their stores. Heather serves on a not-for-profit board, as well as the board of Desjardins Credit Union, chairing its audit committee. Heather holds an MBA from the University of Western Ontario and a BMath degree from the University of Waterloo.

Wendy McDowall VP, Community Investment
Wendy coordinates all public and private sector fundraising efforts for MaRS, as well as program sponsorships and community partnerships.
Wendy joined MaRS from an assignment as the Capital Campaign Director for the Canadian Opera Company’s new performance venue, the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. Previously, Wendy was Director of Development for the Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, and Chief Development Officer on the leadership team for a capital campaign. Before joining Harborview, Wendy was Director of Development for Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle where she oversaw fundraising activities and an endowment campaign. Her fundraising career started in Toronto at McMichael Canadian Art Collection, and was followed by five years as Director of Development and Planned Giving for the National Ballet of Canada. She holds a Bachelor of Arts (Psychology/English) degree from Simon Fraser University.

Tony Redpath VP, Partner Programs
Tony Redpath advises entrepreneurs and high growth companies, particularly in environmental, advanced materials and manufacturing markets, with a special emphasis on mentoring and development of entrepreneurs.
Tony joined MaRS after serving as Vice President at Primaxis, where he evaluated investment opportunities, negotiated investments and managed relationships with investee companies. Prior to Primaxis, Tony worked for the Ontario Centres of Excellence in the materials and manufacturing area. Tony started his industrial career as a research scientist at EcoPlastics, a small technology-based company developing photo-degradable plastics and other environmental technologies. He became president and led the company through a public listing. Tony served as a consultant on environmental issues for a range of companies/agencies in such fields as forestry, health care, chemicals and transportation. Tony holds a BSc in chemistry from the University of Alberta and a PhD in Physical Chemistry (molecular dynamics) from the University of Toronto. He completed post doctoral fellowships in West Berlin (ion-molecule reactions) and Toronto (polymer dynamics).

Don Duval Director, Corporate Development
Don is responsible for business strategy, organizational design and performance management at MaRS.
Don joined MaRS from Deloitte Consulting, where he served as a Senior Manager in the Strategy and Operations Consulting group based in Toronto. Through his consulting career, Don has worked with numerous clients in the life sciences, manufacturing and consumer business industries. In addition, Don was part of a successful service-oriented start-up company, currently serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Engineering and is an Executive Board member for the Queen's Players
Toronto Theatre Company. He holds an BSc in Environmental Chemistry from Queen’s University and a MASc in Civil Engineering from the University of Toronto.

Linda Quattrin
Director, Communications
Linda is responsible for media relations and all aspects of corporate communications at MaRS.
Linda joined MaRS from Robarts Research Institute where she managed communications and public affairs and supported the Institute’s resource development through philanthropy and business development. Prior to that, she was assistant city editor, news reporter, feature writer and copy editor at the Winnipeg Free Press. She trained as a reporter-researcher at the Sunday Telegraph in the U.K. as well as at Maclean’s and the Toronto Star. Linda is a member of the Canadian Science Writers Association, National Association of Science Writers and University Research Magazines Association in the U.S. She holds a BSc from the University of Western Ontario and MJourn from Carleton University.

Ross Wallace Director, Strategic Partnerships
Ross Wallace coordinates MaRS relations and collaboration with all levels of government, regional and international partners as well as other key stakeholders.
Ross joined MaRS after completing his MBA at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management. Before attending Rotman, he worked as the executive editor of Corporate Knights, Canada’s first corporate social-responsibility magazine, helping create partnerships with stakeholders in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors. Ross spent almost five years in Washington, D.C., working for the G7 Group, an economic and political consulting company, and for the Canadian Embassy assisting Canadian companies liaise with the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank. He is a senior member of Canada25, a national non-profit, non-partisan public policy organization, and has received a Masters in Public Administration from Queen’s University. In 2006, Ross received a Global Youth Fellowship from the Walter and Duncan Gordon Foundation

Allyson Hewitt Director, Social Entrepreneurship
Allyson is establishing the social innovation program at MaRS that includes Social Innovation Generation (SiG@MaRS). This program provides social innovators and entrepreneurs access to resources to turn their ideas into positive outcomes for society.
Allyson comes to MaRS from SickKids where, as the Executive Director of Safe Kids Canada, she was an advocate in preventing injuries to children. Prior to that, Allyson was the Executive Director of Community Information Toronto, an agency that matches people with services. In this capacity, she helped lead the development of 211, providing three-digit and online access to social service, community and government information. For this work she was awarded the HRDC-sponsored Head of the Public Service Award and several other awards for meritorious public service. She has a BA in Criminology and Law, a diploma in Public Affairs and certification in Voluntary Sector Management and Leading Change.

Real Estate Development
Dale Martin
Dale Martin leads the MaRS Real Estate Development group.
Dale is a former Member of the City and Metropolitan Toronto Councils, representing the Downtown and Central Waterfront districts. He was the First Ontario Provincial Facilitator responsible for expediting large public and private sector development projects. Dale is the Principal in a firm that provides strategic advice and project implementation services to a diverse group of government and corporate clients.

Bruce Sammons Project/Construction Manager
Bruce Sammons is responsible for construction projects within the MaRS Centre.
Bruce has been completing projects within the industrial, commercial and institutional sector for 25 years and has been involved with the MaRS Centre as part of the development team since the fall of 2002. He is the Principal of his own company, Hudson Melville Inc., which undertakes commercial interior contracting as Project/Construction Managers.
Bruce completed the Architectural Science and Technology Program at Ryerson Polytechnic University with a major in Project Management. He is a member of the Toronto Construction Association.

MaRS CENTRE FACILITY
Randal Froebelius Property Manager
Randal Froebelius is responsible for property management at MaRS, overseeing facilities management and lease administration.
Randal has broad experience in the management, development and construction of industrial, commercial office, retail, institutional and residential properties. He has held project management positions in large general contracting firms and progressively senior management roles at Bramalea Limited and Beutel Goodman Real Estate Group. Prior to founding Equity ICI, he was responsible for all property management and leasehold construction activities associated with the Kolter Property Company’s six million square foot portfolio of assets in Toronto and Dallas. Randal holds a BESc from the University of Western Ontario and an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business. He is a licensed professional engineer in Ontario and a member of Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) and the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP). Randal was recently appointed to the Board of Directors of BOMA Toronto.

Nina Gazzola Director of Operations
Nina Gazzola is responsible for MaRS Centre operations, with a special focus on tenant satisfaction. She also oversees leasing and serves as the Corporate Secretary to the Board of Directors.
Nina was the first employee of MaRS, joining in March 2000. Previously, Nina worked in special projects for the Deputy Minister of the Ontario Ministry of Energy, Science and Technology and for the Dean of Students at Wilfrid Laurier University. Nina holds a BA in Political Science and Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University and is a member of BOMA (Building Owners and Managers Association).

Allen Gelberg Director, MaRS Collaboration Centre
Allen Gelberg oversees all aspects of the events held at the MaRS Collaboration Centre, ensuring that client and attendee expectations are exceeded.
Allen gained extensive experience in the Tourism/Hospitality Industry in Italy and England. Since moving to Canada, he has worked with numerous international hospitality groups in Sales and Marketing capacities. Prior to joining MaRS in August 2005, Allen held the position of Director, Sales and Marketing at Vintage Inns. Reporting to the President, he helped to develop the brand that brought the destination international recognition. Allen holds a BSc in Economics, Sociology & Statistics and a Masters in Tourism Planning & Development.

Robert Smith Chief Technology Consultant
Robert Smith heads up the Information Technology Group at MaRS and was responsible for the design, implementation and management of the IT and AV infrastructure that powers the MaRS Centre, and enables the broader stakeholder community to communicate and collaborate virtually.
Robert is an award winning technology executive with strong strategic, tactical, and management skills. Robert categorizes himself as a Serial Entrepreneur with a passion for technology. With almost 20 years experience as a Technology Professional, Robert has been a pioneer in areas of Visual Communications and Multimedia Infrastructure. He is co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Eyedle Time Media Networks Inc., a convergence communications company that specializes in developing broadband multimedia applications such as the “eyePTV” platform used here at MaRS. Throughout his career Robert has co-founded three technology companies and has authored 3 provisional patents. Robert attended the University of Western Ontario and is a professional Audio Engineer.

Venture Group
Veronika Litinski Director, MaRS Venture Group
Veronika Litinski coordinates the MaRS venture services programs delivered to entrepreneurs, investors and high-growth companies. She also provides advisory services to entrepreneurs and high growth companies, with a special focus on life sciences markets, specializing in corporate finance and business development.
Veronika started her career as a research scientist at Lawrence Livermore Lab in Berkeley, California, where she focused on mechanisms of DNA repair. Transitioning to the business world, Veronika founded a medical journal and earned her MBA (Finance) at the University of San Francisco. Since 1998, Veronika has worked in corporate finance, first as an associate in the Capital Markets group with Union Bank, then with GATX Financial Corporation, where she focused on highly structured transactions and M&A. She was promoted to director of the venture finance group, where she was responsible for the firm’s international operations and life sciences portfolio. She provided technology and industry expertise, reviewed new investment opportunities and managed operations of the international partnerships. Veronika is a member of Financial Women Association (FWA) and Financial Executives International (FEI).

Peter Evans Venture Group Advisor
Peter Evans advises entrepreneurs and high growth companies in ICT markets, specializing in corporate strategic planning, marketing and channel development.
Peter brings to MaRS over 15 years experience working in venture-backed technology start-ups and publicly traded companies in the software, Internet services, online media and telecommunication sectors. Previously, Peter worked in major accounts sales, product management, research and senior marketing roles at Call-Net, Bell Canada, MediaLinx/Sympatico, FloNetwork (acquired by DoubleClick in 2001), PlateSpin Inc. and DCCI Inc. He serves on the board of directors of Sitebrand in Ottawa and the Toronto Venture Group. He is also a member of the Toronto Angel Group. Peter is a noted speaker on various technology and business-to-business marketing trends and best practices. He was educated in cognitive psychology and telecommunications management at the University of Toronto and Ryerson and also holds an MBA from Queen’s University.

Robert Carter advises entrepreneurs and high growth companies in the areas of primary market research, marketing, CRM and analyst relations.
Robert's experience in product marketing and marketing research spans both the consumer and business-to-business arenas. Robert began his career as a project director at Goldfarb Consultants, a leading international research firm where he advised such clients as Xerox, Scotiabank, The Gap and Bell Canada on the design and implementation of strategic marketing research, from usage and attitude studies to customer satisfaction and new product development research. He has held marketing and research roles with several leading online companies including Sympatico.ca, FloNetwork and PlateSpin Inc. Robert graduated with an MSc in consumer studies (marketing management) from the University of Guelph and also holds a BComm from Laurentian University.

John McCulloch Venture Group Advisor
John advises entrepreneurs and high growth companies in the life sciences sector to help them realize the commercial value of their discoveries.
Prior to joining MaRS, John spent over 13 years advising life sciences investors and evaluated clinical, regulatory, intellectual property and competitive issues in a $1.0 billion life sciences investment fund. He collaborated with stakeholders from all areas of the life sciences continuum, including individual inventors, universities, hospitals, start-up biotechs, small and large pharma. John’s medical research career included studies in the UK, Canada and Japan and explored aspects of immunity in health and disease. He holds a PhD from the University of London and a BSc from the University of Glasgow. John has also been an active fundraiser for the CAMH Foundation since 1996.

Kevin Downing Associate, Venture Group
Kevin Downing supports multiple MaRS teams including the MaRS Centre and MaRS Corporate, but works primarily with the Venture Group team. Kevin helps develop and support MaRS Venture Group clients through market research, presentation assistance and connecting individuals and companies through the extensive MaRS network.
Kevin joined MaRS in the winter of 2006. He graduated from Dalhousie University with a combined degree in Biochemistry and Microbiology. His research at Dalhousie focused on viral oncolysis and cancer research. Kevin worked on a Federal election campaign and was responsible for sponsorship development at The Atlantic Jazz Festival.

Lincoln Kim Manager, MaRS Venture Group
Lincoln Kim is a member of the healthcare and life sciences team of the MaRS Venture Group. He evaluates and supports the development of technology platforms and commercial market opportunities of start up and emerging companies, facilitates collaboration among research groups and between research scientists and industry.
Lincoln Kim joined MaRS in the summer of 2006. He is the co-founder of a biotech start-up company, WoundRegen, which was largely based on his doctoral research. He holds a HBSc, a PhD in Physiology and completed the Collaborative Program in Neuroscience, all at the University of Toronto. Lincoln serves on the board of a non-profit community geriatrics program and has been a team leader on a number of international humanitarian aid projects.

Elias Bardouniotis Manager, MaRS Venture Group
Elias Bardouniotis manages advisory engagements for the Venture Group portfolio companies, supports business development activities and advises entrepreneurs and high growth companies.
Prior to joining MaRS, Elias was a scientist at Affinium Pharmaceuticals, where he was responsible for managing start-up operations of the microbiology lab that facilitated the drug discovery and development of a novel class of anti-infective therapeutics. Prior to joining MaRS in May 2005, she worked as the Business Information Specialist responsible for InfoSolutions, an information service attached to the Business Information Centre, Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. Helen holds a BA (English and French Literatures) and an MA (English Literature) and is a graduate of the Master of Information Studies (MISt) program at the University of Toronto. Peter Tolnai MaRS Capital – Advisor
Peter is a special advisor to MaRS on the formation of capital pools and works with the MaRS Venture Group on attracting investment capital to MaRS-sponsored businesses.
Peter is the founder and President of Orchard Capital Group Inc, an angel venture capital fund where he invests in technology companies that benefit from his managerial assistance. Previously, Peter served as VP of Citibank Venture Capital, Managing Director of Clairvest Group Inc and Partner in Helix Investments Ltd. He currently serves on the boards of several technology and consumer businesses. Peter holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BA from Queen's University.

Nina Chagnon Director of Business Development
Nina Chagnon facilitates connections between MaRS and its constituents to the biopharmaceutical industry and develops programs for bio-entrepreneurs.
Nina joined MaRS in the summer of 2004, bringing scientific and engineering skills, as well as experience in manufacturing, business development and marketing. Prior to joining MaRS, Nina worked as a business and public affairs consultant at Sanofi Pasteur (then Aventis Pasteur), as well as with European life science businesses seeking partnering or business opportunities in North America. She spent the first ten years of her career moving from research scientist to senior level management at Lallemand, an international specialty biomass manufacturer servicing the agri-food and health industries. Nina holds a BSc from McGill University (Microbiology), an MSc from the University of Minnesota (Microbial Engineering) with a focus on scale production of recombinant organisms and an MBA from the University of Toronto.

Assunta Krehl Manager, Program Marketing (on parental leave)
Assunta Krehl manages the MaRS database and supports the MaRS marketing team in coordinating MaRS events and communications.
Assunta joined MaRS in February 2003. Previously, Assunta worked at AXIS Database Marketing Group as an Account Manager, where she lead her team in the design, development, training and execution of call centre databases. Assunta has experience in corporate training, curriculum design, marketing and database designs with such companies as Carlton Cards, Sun Life Financial, The University of Western Ontario and The Humber Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning. Assunta also served on the board of directors for Literacy North Halton and is a member of CATA WIT (Women in Technology) Forum. Assunta holds an MA in Adult Education from the University of Central Michigan, as well as a BA in Sociology from the University of Western Ontario.

Aimee Park Premier’s Summit Award
Aimee manages the Premier’s Summit Award in Medical Research, a program that provides research support to medical researchers in Ontario.
Aimee joins MaRS from the Ontario Innovation Trust, where she serves as Director of Research Programs, overseeing program delivery and contract and financial management of more than $844 million in research infrastructure investments to 44 Ontario universities, hospitals, colleges and research institutes. Previously, Aimee worked at the University of Toronto in the Government Research Infrastructure Programs. She holds a BA from the University of Toronto.

Charles Plant Managing Director, Market Readiness Program
Charles Plant is developing the Business Mentorship and Entrepreneurship Program, a component in the Ministry of Research and Innovation’s Market Readiness Program.
Charles is a seasoned financial executive specializing in corporate development and business performance improvement. He has worked closely with over 100 companies in the past 28 years and brings a multi-disciplinary perspective to solving business problems. In addition to being the CEO or CFO of several successful software companies, he has acted as an advisor to companies as an investment banker, management consultant, commercial banker, and auditor. Charles is currently on the faculty of York University’s Schulich School of Business and is a Chartered Accountant with an MBA in marketing.

Ann Elisabeth Samson Manager, Programs (on parental leave)
Ann Elisabeth works with the program team and community partners to develop relevant and engaging discussions and events at MaRS. She also communicates the MaRS story through the MaRS Portal and other media.
Ann Elisabeth has experience conducting research and writing about science, technology, and innovation including for CBC News, the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), the Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID), and the Centre for Research on Women's Health. She has worked internationally in science policy, having presented research at conferences in Kenya, Mexico and the Netherlands and directed science policy workshops at forums in India and Brazil. Ann Elisabeth holds a BA in History and Science from Harvard University and an MPhil from the University of Cambridge (UK) in the History and Philosophy of Science, with her main research for both focused on the public understanding of science, genetics and health.

Dawn Marie Schlegel Associate Director, Community Investment
Dawn Marie develops and implements fundraising programs for MaRS, including annual giving and major gifts, as well as our donor relations program.
Dawn Marie comes to MaRS from the Canadian Opera Company, where she was responsible for the development and execution of the donor relations and stewardship program for the capital campaign to build the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. Dawn Marie has extensive experience working with donors and was an integral part of the successful process of soliciting major gift donors for the COC capital campaign. Previously, Dawn Marie developed and managed donor stewardship programs at the Toronto Rehab Foundation and the Stratford Festival.

Amie Sergas Manager, Mentorship Programs
Business Mentorship and Entrepreneurship Program (BMEP)
Amie manages the mentorship programs component of the Business Mentorship and Entrepreneurship Program (BMEP), part of Ontario’s Market Readiness Program.
Amie comes to MaRS from the Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation (OCRI) where she re-launched and managed a clean technology business development network. Amie has a diverse background in research, marketing and business development across the life sciences, agriculture, telecommunications and clean technologies sectors. She has managed stakeholder relations among private, public and non-profit organizations, and has successfully navigated projects through entrepreneurial environments. Amie holds a BSc in Biotechnology and an MBA for Science and Technology from Queen’s University where she focused on New Venture Management.

Claude Soulodre Multimedia Content Manager, Market Readiness Program
Claude manages the development of educational resources and other online multimedia content for Ontario entrepreneurs as part of the Market Readiness Program.
Claude has spent the last six years helping companies design and implement web-based multimedia content. Claude joins MaRS from Excerpta Medica Interactive where he was responsible for program development and multimedia marketing projects for ExMI’s major international clients. Prior to this, Claude was a project manager at MediResource, where he coordinated the development of interactive pharmaceutical continuing education and sales force training programs. Claude is a Project Management Professional, has been a freelance voice artist and is a competitive Ironman triathlete.

Lisa Torjman Associate, Social Entrepreneurship and SiG@MaRS
Lisa Torjman joined MaRS to establish the social entrepreneurship program at MaRS that includes Social Innovation Generation (SiG@MaRS). This program provides social innovators and entrepreneurs access to resources to turn their ideas into positive outcomes for society.
Lisa previously worked as an account executive at Manifest Communications, a social marketing agency, and prior to that, at the Corkin Shopland Gallery in the Distillery District. Before moving to Toronto, Lisa was employed at the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation over three summers while attending McGill University as an English Major with a Cultural Studies concentration. Lisa is actively involved in the arts in Toronto, most recently with the Luminato Festival and the Framework Foundation.

Cathy Bogaart Portal Manager
Cathy Bogaart manages all MaRS Web services, including the design, development and execution of website and newsletter programs to promote education, communication and innovation.
Cathy joined MaRS in early 2006. She has broad experience in managing online media programs and has developed a range of award-winning products. She began her career at Canadian Corporate News where she coordinated Web site production, managed the e-news service and wrote Internet training manuals. She has focused in the life sciences industry, having consulted on projects for the National Ovarian Cancer Association, Asthma Society, Sunnybrook and Women’s College Hospital, Janssen-Ortho, Pfizer and Bayer. Before joining MaRS, Cathy was the Managing Editor of the Health Portal Network at MediResource, reaching over 30 million people annually through all major Canadian Internet portals, including MSN/Sympatico, Canoe.ca and AOL Canada. Cathy holds a BAA in Journalism from Ryerson Polytechnic University, certification in the Ontario Management Development Program and is a member of Wired Woman Society and CATA Women in Technology Forum.

David Kim Web Developer
David Kim develops and maintains web applications for the MaRS Portal, including planning, developing, testing and integration.
David previously worked as a contract/freelance developer, specializing in Java and content management systems. He received his Certificate in Java Professional Programming from Daesin Technical College in Korea and did a postgraduate certificate at Humber College in Internet Software Development. David is also an entrepreneur, and has been running his own company, Eagle Project 24, for over three years.
