The rise of India as an economic and political force is a development with significant and far-reaching implications for Canadian companies, governments, universities and hospitals.

As part of its mission to explore the international nature of innovation and commerce, MaRS is launching its new Global Leadership Series with a broad examination on India’s ascendance – and its impact on Canada – through the eyes of two informed observers of India.

Raj Subramaniam will share the insights gleaned through FedEx’s entry into India – and by its decision to establish a new direct India-China cargo flight – while Kasi Rao will provide an overview of India’s rise and its implications for Canada.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

John Manley – Vice-Chair of MaRS

Hon. John P. Manley

The Honourable John Manley held several senior portfolios in the Canadian Government throughout his 15 years of public service including Industry, Foreign Affairs and Finance as well as being Deputy Prime Minister. Following 9/11, Mr. Manley was named Chairman of the Public Security and Anti-terrorism Cabinet Committee. After leaving federal politics, he chaired a review committee reporting to the Ontario Government on the future of the province's power generation company and also co-chaired a trilateral independent task force on the future of North America for the Council on Foreign Relations, a nonpartisan and independent membership organization. A Senior Counsel at McCarthy Tétrault LLP, Mr. Manley provides strategic advice on matters relating to public affairs, including trade, telecommunications, security and finance. He also consults clients on matters concerning foreign governments. He sits on the Boards of Directors of Nortel Networks, the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and Canadian Pacific Railway as well as a number of advisory Boards and not-for-profit organizations.

Raj Subramaniam

Raj Subramaniam is one of the rising stars of the FedEx international executive team. During his career at FedEx, Raj’s leadership has been key to developing and executing successful strategies for revenue growth, profitability, brand awareness and corporate reputation building in the US, Asia and Canada.

Prior to being appointed president of the Canadian division in September 2003—where he is responsible for overseeing the company’s strategic direction covering sales, marketing, air and ground operations, customer service and customs brokerage business—he served as vice president in the company’s Asia Pacific region.

A self-proclaimed “Citizen of the World”, Raj was born in Trivandrum, India. He is a graduate from The Indian Institute of Technology, where he received his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering. He holds two masters’ degrees, in chemical engineering from Syracuse University and in business administration from the University of Texas at Austin.

Kasi Rao

Kasi Rao has a diverse professional background. Most recently he was the Executive Director, Beacon Project at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. Prior to that he was the Director, Operations, Office of the President and CEO at BMO Financial Group. He also worked at the University of Toronto in a two-pronged role as Director of the Office of the President & Director of Government Relations. His public sector experience includes serving as the Senior Policy Advisor, Government of Ontario in New York, and as Policy Advisor to the Premier of Ontario. Kasi is a Senior Fellow at the Munk Centre and has both an M.A. from the University of Toronto and a B.A. from the University of Waterloo in Political Science.
