ABOUT THE MODERATOR
Kim Parlee Kim Parlee is the host of two shows on Business News Network, Stars &
Dogs,an intelligent tongue-in-cheek look at the markets and After Hours –
a live breaking news program.
Parlee joined BNN in its infancy and quickly moved to reporting and
anchoring its live programs. Over 7 years, she has covered the biggest
business news stories, hosted live coverage on breaking news events, and has
interviewed over 3,000 business leaders.
Prior to joining BNN, Kim launched her journalism career at CBC Newsworld.
But her in-depth knowledge of business evolved from working in strategy and
finance at a number of blue-chip companies including PepsiCo. and Labatt in
Canada and abroad.
Following that she taught marketing at Dalhousie University, and helped
start a technology venture capital company in Toronto.
Kim has an International MBA from the Schulich School of Business and

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Dave Sparling, Ph.D. David Sparling is Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies in the
College of Management and Economics at the University of Guelph in Canada.
In 2006 and 2007 he was the Executive Director of the Institute of Agri-Food
Policy Innovation, examining issues related to agriculture and food policy.
He has published and spoken frequently on the future directions of
agriculture and food and the coming mega-changes in the role of the industry
and shifts in food production and pricing. He has consulted widely for
governments and industry associations. David has also been president of a
farming company, an agri-business insurance company and a biotechnology
start-up.
He is an internationally recognized authority on issues related to food
policy, agri-food supply chains and commercializing new technologies. David
is a Senior Associate at the University of Melbourne and has taught at the
Australian Graduate School of Management in Sydney.
Michael E. Detlefsen Michael E. Detlefsen is the President of Ceres Global Ag Corporation, a
Toronto-based investment corporation whose public and private holdings are
focused on the global agri-food sector. Mr. Detlefsen is also currently the
Co-Managing Director of Muir Detlefsen & Associates Limited, a Toronto-based
active investor advisory firm that uses it intellectual and relationship
capital to create shareholder value for its financial investor partners.
From 2005 to 2007, Mr. Detlefsen was the President of Maple Leaf Global
Foods, the global sales, marketing and trading arm of parent Maple Leaf
Foods Inc. Mr. Detlefsen was also an Executive Vice President, Vertical
Coordination at Maple Leaf Foods Inc. from 2000 to 2005, responsible for
developing and implementing the key strategic and operational initiatives of
the pork and poultry value chains. During 1999 and 2000, Mr. Detlefsen was a
Vice President of Corporate Development at Maple Leaf Foods Inc.
Mr. Detlefsen received a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from Queen’s
University in 1986 and a Masters in Public Policy from Harvard University in
1988, and is currently a Governor of the Royal Ontario Museum, and serves as
Chair of its Royal Patrons’ Circle (the ROM’s operational fundraising arm),
and is a director of the State Street Bank and Trust (Canada). He currently
lives in Toronto, Canada with his wife and two daughters.
