BioDiscovery Toronto links nine of Toronto's internationally recognized biomedical research institutions for the commercialization of research. We provide a one-stop shop for companies seeking break-through biomedical and related technologies and expertise. Our member universities and research hospitals shown below lead the world in research in genomics, diagnostics, neuroscience, regenerative medicine, drug discovery, immunology, bioinformatics and medical devices, comprising a research enterprise with annual funding of more than $800 million.

BioDiscovery Toronto's vision:
Maximize the commercialization of biomedical research by linking research, industry and capital.

BioDiscovery Toronto’s mandate:
  • direct resources to development of discoveries arising from university and hospital research
  • provide a central interface between Toronto research and industry
  • facilitate cross-institutional projects.

BioDiscovery Toronto works in full collaboration with the business development offices of its member institutions in order to:
  • Support a central point-of-entry to facilitate industry/VC access to innovations
  • Support early stage commercialization projects
  • Involve industry and business expertise at the earliest stages of invention and technology development
  • Build partnerships between academic, entrepreneurial, industrial, financial and government partners
  • Collaborate on mentorship and training opportunities to researchers, graduate students and entrepreneurs in the Toronto region

BioDiscovery Toronto is also part of a system of Ontario regional innovation networks (RINs). These are multi-stakeholder organizations that were established by the Ontario government in 2004 to increase innovation in the Province and to foster better academic-industry partnerships. Core funding for BioDiscovery Toronto is provided by member institutions and from the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation's Regional Innovation Networks Program, the federal government's NSERC/CIHR Intellectual Property Mobilizations Program and the City of Toronto.
