What is Social Innovation?

The innovation process – turning great ideas into tangible reality – can impact the social sector as profoundly as the private sector.

Social innovation is a concept that involves the use of new technology, or the new use of existing technology to achieve a social purpose.  It includes the application of examples of good social practice so that these can have an impact on more people.

And while social innovation looks for new sources of financing, it also energizes the entrepreneurial spirit to think beyond profits alone.

There is a tremendous pool of talent in Canada, and an emerging network of initiatives looking to support, broker and launch this burgeoning milieu of social enterprise, hoping to transform it into a booming sector.

SiG is one such initiative that looks at what mechanisms must work in concert to transform an idea into a positive outcome for society – and how that process can be both supported and accelerated.
