In March 2006, the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation announced the establishment of the Premier’s Summit Award program, with MaRS as the administrator. The Award will recognize the extraordinary scientific talent and medical research excellence in the Province of Ontario. Each of the anticipated ten winners will receive $5 million over a five-year period, derived from a $2.5 million contribution from the Award program, matched by $2.5 million from the sponsoring institution. One to three Awards will be made annually.
The sheer size of the Award is truly unprecedented. Winners will be able to expand their research with the significant investment, triggering new initiatives and innovation, as well as attracting and retaining the best researchers to Ontario. The Award Committee will be chaired by Dr. John Evans, President Emeritus, University of Toronto and Chair of the MaRS Board of Directors.
MaRS has released the program guidelines and will be accepting nominations until December 15. The first recipients of the Premier’s Summit Award will be announced in spring 2007.
