Advancing Regenerative Medicine

Aggregate Therapeutics
Aggregrate Therapeutics Inc. — a partnership between MaRS and the Stem Cell Network — is moving forward with worldwide patenting for several promising Canadian regenerative medicine technologies. Most recently, the company received an Australian patent covering patient-derived stem cells in addition to its issued U.S. patents.

The current portfolio of regenerative medicine technologies, which derive from discovery science at four Canadian laboratories, offer new hope in the areas of spinal cord repair, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Securing global patent rights, which can prove cost-prohibitive for some individual research institutions, is part of Aggregate’s strategy to derive greater value from Canadian science.

“The structure of Aggregate Therapeutics represents a radically new commercialization model that allows investors to quickly identify the most innovative convergent technologies by offering them a central point to access early intellectual property,“ said Dr. Freda Miller, Senior Scientist at The Hospital for Sick Children Research Institute and founder of Aegera Therapeutics Inc. “I’m most impressed by the energy and commitment that MaRS has demonstrated for this project in such a short time.”

Established in mid-2005, Aggregate is dedicated to developing the discoveries of 37 leading Canadian scientists working at 16 academic institutions.
