CIBC has joined MaRS as naming donor of its key skill-building program, Entrepreneurship 101.
This free non-credit course is designed to introduce members of the research community to issues relating to starting and growing a technology-based business. It is targeted at graduate students, post-docs, faculty, technicians and others active in the biological and physical sciences and engineering.
Presented as weekly lectures — and offered via webcast for the first time this year — the series explores a range of topics, including financing, defining markets, hiring teams and protecting intellectual property. The program is delivered by a range of seasoned entrepreneurs and business people and represents a targeted investment for CIBC.
“In 2006, the CIBC group of companies contributed $28 million in Canada to hundreds of charitable and community-based organizations with a strategic focus on youth, education and health,” said Gerry McCaughey, President and Chief Executive Officer of CIBC. “Entrepreneurship 101 at MaRS offers an important set of tools for the education and development of entrepreneurial skills for young people in science.”
As a non-profit organization with a big vision — building global companies from Canadian science and technology — MaRS is grateful for CIBC’s support.
“MaRS is delighted that CIBC will present Entrepreneurship 101,” said Wendy McDowall, Vice President Community Investment for MaRS. “It is a key component of our programming and a crucial piece of the commercialization puzzle for aspiring entrepreneurs. CIBC’s donation to MaRS reinforces this fact.
