Not Just a Pretty Façade

Computerworld Honors Program
MaRS joins some illustrious company in being recognized as a 2007 Laureate by the Computerworld Honors Program.

Stanford University, Barnes & Noble Booksellers and the City of Kyoto, Japan are among the other recipients of the 2007 award, which acknowledges individuals and organizations that have used information technology to benefit society.

Nortel nominated MaRS for the Laureate Award, which was presented at a Washington, D.C. gala in June.

“Keeping Canada at the foreground of new technology innovation is the focus of Toronto’s MaRS Discovery District, which houses Canadian scientific, business and capital communities,” said John Roese, Nortel’s Chief Technology Officer.

“An advanced, converged multimedia network was deployed at MaRS to handle the anticipated explosion of data, voice and video traffic resulting from researchers collaborating using a myriad of devices. Handling this type of hyperconnectivity is our mission and specialty at Nortel and we are proud to be supporting the success of MaRS.”

The 700,000 sq. ft. MaRS Centre delivers a full suite of network-accessible multimedia collaboration applications and communication services — not only for its mix of on-site tenants but to a range of partners. Fully integrated audio, video and data systems offer tremendous flexibility for event production at MaRS. That sophisticated infrastructure has no doubt played a role in attracting more than 135,000 participants to events at MaRS since the Centre officially opened in 2005.
