AIDS is now the leading cause of death in Africa. The concept of Give a Day began in 2004 when a group of doctors led by Dr. Jane Philpott, in Markham, gave one day’s pay on World AIDS Day, December 1st.
The 2006 Give a Day campaign was launched on October 11th at the MaRS Centre. Stephen Lewis and Dr. James Orbinski, along with leaders from business and sports, called on individuals to give one day’s pay toward fighting the AIDS crisis globally.
Following the participation of MaRS in the XVI International AIDS Conference last summer, the MaRS team fully supported Give a Day campaign. “I’m so proud of MaRS for joining this incredible effort. It’s a great cause.” said Cathy Bogaart, MaRS Portal Manager. Tony Redpath, said of his decision to donate, “It’s a powerful concept — to think that one day can make such a difference.”
This year, Give a Day moved beyond the health sector by calling on other industries to get involved. MaRS staff joined teachers, lawyers, flight attendants, corporations and others by each donating one day’s pay on December 1st. In 2006, over $480K was raised by the Give a Day campaign.
