The MaRS Centre received an Award of Excellence at the 32nd Annual Heritage Toronto Awards. The recognition for Architectural Conservation and Craftsmanship was made specifically for the Heritage Building of the MaRS Centre.
The jury said the “overall context [of the building] combining a generous setback for new and old buildings together, contributes very positively to the urban fabric and provides pedestrians with a block-long landscaped space rarely found on arterial streets in the city.” Overall, the jury felt that the success of the MaRS Centre redevelopment was due to the mix of old and new: “a historically significant heritage building restored in complete architectural balance with a large scale contemporary architectural development, all skillfully woven together in harmony with the urban context.”
Dale Martin, who attended the event and has been with MaRS since the beginning, commented: “This Award is a great achievement for those who had a vision of re-purposing the Toronto General Hospital and recognition for the architects who made it happen.”
