MaRS Educating Future Entrepreneurs

Entrepreneurship 101, the highly successful MaRS course designed for science students to learn how to build a company or take an idea to market, has been joined this year by a BioEntrepreneurship Series.  The nine-part lecture series is intended to complement Entrepreneurship 101 by giving insight specifically into the bio industry and the elements necessary to effectively commercialize life sciences research, including therapeutics, devices, and diagnostics.

Each session features a different topic and industry experts focused on everything from the basics of the biotech business to building an intellectual property strategy.  Nina Chagnon, MaRS Director of Business Development and series organize, says the course has been very successful.  “We’ve clearly identified an important need not being served by others.  I’m thrilled with the quality of and consistent interest in the BioEntrepreneurship lectures.”

Course attendees are career researchers and graduate students who “get a chance to learn from the real-life experience of industry experts in an environment that affords them a chance to interact and truly learn from one another,” says Chagnon.  “We’re also following that interaction up with entries in the MaRS Blog,” she says, where the conversations are continued and presentations and videos from the lectures are available after each event.

The Entrepreneurship 101 course is also having a successful second run at MaRS.  This year, there has been an increased focus on success stories in the lectures.  More “mentoring sessions” have been added, a feature that has been very well received by both attendees and mentors alike.  Like the BioEntrepreneurship course, the material and follow-up questions and conversations from each session are available on the MaRS Blog.
