Over 250 Scientists Converge at MaRS Centre to Learn the Basics of Building a Technology Business

The MaRS Discovery District, a not-for-profit corporation and convergence innovation centre founded to help build Canada’s next generation of technology companies become global market leaders, launched its “Entrepreneurship 101” program series yesterday.

Sponsored by MaRS, the U of T Department of Chemistry and the Institute for Optical Sciences, this program is specially designed for researchers in biological, physical sciences and engineering. These lectures are being offered free of charge to students who have no prior knowledge of business but have an interest in exploiting the results of their research or creating a company.

Entrepreneurship 101 lectures over the next six months will explore a range of issues related to starting and growing a technology-based business. Experts from a variety of disciplines will focus on topics such as: market research; writing effective business plans/research proposals; intellectual property management; building and motivating teams; presentation and negotiating skills.

“The overwhelming response we’ve had to this program is proof that students have an interest in entrepreneurship and that science and business can indeed mix,” said Dr. Ilse Treurnicht, CEO of MaRS. “Our efforts to encourage science and engineering students to think about starting a company or joining a young company, and to provide them with some basic tools are vital to improving our efforts to commercialize innovations that will shape our economy.”

The Entrepreneurship 101 Lecture Series builds on the successful 2004 program offered by Professors Cynthia Goh and Dwayne Miller of the University of Toronto Department of Chemistry and the Institute for Optical Sciences. Courses are conveniently offered at the MaRS Centre and on the University of Toronto Campus.
