The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation has announced the winners for the $100,000 for its Grand Challenge Exploration project. The grants are for research work directly or indirectly related to malaria.
Out of 4000 applications, only 104 won the grant. One of them is Ryan Lilien, a UofT Assistant Professor and researcher for their Computational Biology department.
The grant received by Dr. Lilien is to computationally model the structural and functional effects of point mutation on a target protein’s active site. This could be of significant importance in understanding protein mutation processes and assist the drug development of more effective anti-infective treatments.
