Position Overview:

As Ontario’s backbone of innovation, ORION has a unique mandate that bridges public and private sector interests through its operation of Ontario’s advanced research, education and innovation fibre optic network. ORION is dedicated exclusively to supporting and enhancing the collaboration and innovation capabilities of Ontario’s researchers, educators, scientists, innovators and learners. This means working with a broad range of people and groups in universities, colleges, research labs and institutes, hospitals and health research facilities, innovation support organizations, school boards, government, and private companies and having to understand and manage a diversity of viewpoints, positions and interests.

The successful applicant will require a strong understanding of the effective use of content for the purpose of marketing and communications. This individual will be responsible for creating, editing and sourcing content (all media formats, including video, blogs, and images) to increase the exposure of ORION and support community relationships. Working with the ORION marketing team, this individual will be responsible for creating engaging, relevant content and communicating through various integrated channels.

You will have an opportunity to work with a dynamic team of professionals at a non-profit organization in the heart of downtown Toronto, and to interact with leaders from Ontario’s institutions and education sectors.

Reporting to the Director, Marketing and Communications, you will help ORION grow its business and add value for its customers and key stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with internal groups to support all of ORION’s content needs
  • Write press releases that engage media, clients, and/or key stakeholders
  • Create original content and pitches for digital and traditional media outlets
  • Collaborate with various departments to create marketing collateral to support business development
  • Participate in the creative vision process for the ORION brand
  • Assist in the development of speaking notes for the President/CEO and Board Chair for ORION events
  • Evaluate metrics and make recommendations for content improvements
  • Assign, identify and/or create content for the website, email and social media, managing an editorial calendar to ensure consistency across channels and balance of messaging
  • Develop communication materials that support ORION events
  • Use Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube and recommend other social media platforms to engage our community – specifically in the research, education and innovation sector
  • Utilize integrated marketing techniques to increase attendance at events, including SEO, email, web, media and social media
  • Work with marketing team in executing ORION events
  • Assist in evaluating campaign success using Google Analytics and other reporting tools
  • Other communications activities as assigned by manager

Reporting Relationship:

This position reports directly to the Director, Marketing & Communications

Key Performance Metrics:

  • Increase the number of quality connections on ORION social networks, further establishing ORION as a trusted member and leader in the research, education and innovation community in Ontario
  • Increase website traffic to identified key destinations to demonstrate brand awareness
  • Achieve benchmarked open- and click-through-rates on email campaigns
  • Meet event attendance targets, ensuring greater engagement with our target community

Qualifications:

  • Excellent writing and editing skills with a minimum of two years’ experience
  • Understanding of basic image editing
  • In-depth understanding of various social media platforms, including but not limited to: Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter & Youtube
  • Solid understanding of social media marketing best practices
  • Fearless attitude towards technology and a willingness to learn
  • Must be comfortable with Microsoft Office suite (word, excel, outlook, power point)
  • Analytical skills
  • Ability to make sound decisions based on organizational strategy
  • Passionate about the digital space and actively engaged in it
  • WordPress and Google Analytics experience would be an asset
  • A solid understanding of the education and research sector is an asset
  • Education: Ideal – Degree or diploma in Marketing and/or Business and/or Communications (Creative Writing)
  • Strong team player with ability to present varying viewpoints between multiple stakeholders
  • Attention to detail with the ability to multi-task
  • Self-motivated and innovative
