Position Overview:

The Intellectual Property Coordinator will be a key contributor in the formalization of intellectual property (IP) developed at Synaptive Medical. The IP coordinator will work closely with the engineering team and partnering research groups to assess patentability of concepts and play a hands-on role in drafting material for provisional applications and subsequently migrate the documents to a state that requires minimal input from an external patent agent. The IP Coordinator will work under the supervision of a senior team member responsible for oversight of IP generated and owned by Synaptive Medical. This will be an opportunity for someone with a technical background to contribute towards key IP that will add immense business and strategic value to the company and an opportunity to be a named inventor where appropriate contributions are made.

Responsibilities

Tasks

  • Participate in concept and design reviews to capture concepts and ideas worth protecting
  • Work closely with the technical team to transcribe the concepts and ideas into a format that meets all essential components of a patent application
  • Evaluate patents assigned to similar technologies to conduct preliminary patentability assessment and capture essential elements of suitable claims
  • Work with technical team members to formalize claims
  • Assist in evaluating technologies for the purpose of licensing

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, or equivalent
  • Registered patent agent or have a strong interest in obtaining this certification
  • Excellent written communication skills

Highly Beneficial

  • Submitted more than one patent applications through USPTO, Canadian Patent Office or European Patent Office
  • Knowledgeable in the areas of robotics, optics, medical imaging and other surgical tools
  • Knowledgeable in basic drafting tools (MSWord Draw, PointPoint draw and/or Mechanical CAD tools such as SolidWorks)

Interpersonal Skills

  • Self-motivated and self-managing
  • Ability to work in a highly-technical, fast-paced environment
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with technical team members in order to capture and document inventive ideas

Synaptive Medical is looking for a person who enjoys comprehending technical problems within a fast-paced environment while utilizing their patent agent training to effectively capture IP.
