General Description and Accountability
Part of the high performance MaRS Entrepreneurship Programs team, this position is responsible for the planning, execution and delivery of a suite of high quality entrepreneurship series as well as developing strategies to improve the content, format, and marketing of our series events held at MaRS and distributed throughout Ontario and Canada via videos and webcasts.   If you’re passionate about education and keen to deliver events and programs that support thousands of Canada’s entrepreneurs with the latest knowledge in innovation and entrepreneurship, this is the role for you.

Key Job Responsibilities
The Manager, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Series is responsible for planning, mobilizing resources, and coordinating stakeholders, speakers, and team members in order to deliver various series and programs that support the needs of entrepreneurs in the GTA and around Canada. This includes the development and delivery of eight live educational series: our flagship 30-week Entrepreneurship 101 program (the largest entrepreneurship education program in Canada with 26,000 views/attendees), MaRS Best Practices, MaRS Global Leadership, MaRS Startup Book Club, MaRS Future of Medicine, MaRS Market Insights, and our new youth program the MaRS Future Leaders program. Other events and series may be added in the future.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Curriculum development: Working with MaRS Entrepreneurship Programs and the MaRS Business Services team to assess client/attendee needs to develop and enhance educational programming and translate insights into relevant and cutting edge educational topics and programming
  • Event project management: Planning, managing and delivering an annual calendar of live events including the organization and delivery of multiple educational programs; Creating and executing project work plans and identifying and coordinating resources to deliver on time and on budget; planning event kick-off meetings and organizing staffing for each event
  • Program improvements and measuring results: Administering surveys to evaluate quality of entrepreneurship series events and improving programs based on feedback; reporting on event metrics and results via quarterly and annual reports; developing strategies to guarantee the delivery of high quality educational events and measuring results
  • Content development: Proactively sourcing and recruiting appropriate entrepreneurs and speakers and/or partnering organizations for events and programs and identifying new topics to improve content. Curating a suite of lesson plans and resources for high school business teachers that align with the Ontario curriculum.
  • Developing and executing marketing strategy: Producing short-term and long-term marketing plans for local, provincial and national marketing, managing annual marketing budget; monitoring and reporting on the success of various campaigns to broaden the reach of event series marketing
  • Ensuring the efficient delivery of high quality live events, online videos and webcasts by implementing processes in conjunction with the MaRS Events team, MaRS AV Team and MaRS Media
  • Community outreach: Attending industry events and conferences to identify and grow a wide base of contacts and building relationships to promote MaRS and its programs
  • Thought leadership: Contributing to MaRS thought leadership via blogs, articles and speaking engagements on an array of topics related to entrepreneurship education
  • Revenue: Developing unique strategies to generate revenue from educational programs including working with the Manager, Community Investments to source sponsorship from partners, grants and foundations
  • Responsible for other education projects agreed upon from time to time to support the Entrepreneurship Programs team

Educational/Technical Requirements

  • University Degree
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years business experience in a client-facing role
  • A background in education and/or project management is an asset
  • Very strong project management skills
  • Passion for and experience building strategic relationships with internal and external contacts; excellent interpersonal and communications skills (oral and written) and comfortable with public speaking (introducing speakers at events)
  • Familiar with the “language” and terminology of business and entrepreneurship
  • Strong capabilities in MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel; open to learning new technologies to support marketing efforts (WordPress, JIVE, Creative Suite design programs)

  • Excellent organizational, planning and time management skills: ability to manage shifting priorities and details without losing sight of the big picture
  • Interest in entrepreneurship, education and helping start-up companies
  • A self-starter and proven driver of change with personal accountability and a commitment to achieving and exceeding goals and objectives
  • Flexibility and adaptability to seize new opportunities and change existing programs to further meet and exceed clients’ needs
  • Superior interpersonal skills, demonstrated passion for building relationships; ability to influence others without formal authority
  • Maturity and high level of personal integrity; consummate professional, able to represent the organization in all circumstances
  • Some travel within Ontario may be required
