Description:

The University of Toronto is a pioneering institution in creating companies and entrepreneurship. Since 1921, the University has created over 300 companies. Undergraduates, graduate students, post-docs, and professors across campus are innovating and translating their work into companies, products, and services. As a large and diverse university, UofT has many nodes of excellence in fostering student entrepreneurship. Examples include the Creative Destruction Lab, The Hatchery, The Impact Centre, Techna, UTEST, and initiatives at The University of Toronto Mississauga and The University of Toronto Scarborough, in addition to support from the Innovations & Partnerships Office. The Banting and Best Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (BBCIE) is the tri-campus umbrella for the entire University’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship activities.

In partnership with UofT’s Faculties of Arts and Science, Applied Science and Engineering and the Rotman School of Management, the Managing Director, Banting and Best Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship promotes student entrepreneurship and identifies opportunities to promote the translation of UofT research and innovation into opportunities for company creation in ways that are consistent with academic principles. Reporting directly to the Vice-President, University Operations (as academic lead), the Managing Director ensures tri-campus entrepreneurship initiatives align with overall University strategy, and works in partnership with these initiatives to help ensure their success in the creation of successful UofT start-up companies. The incumbent facilitates access to external partnership and financial opportunities in support of UofT’s entrepreneurship and commercialization goals.

The Managing Director, Banting and Best Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship proactively sources and secures funding to support the operations of the BBCIE, and will be responsible for finalizing the corresponding staffing plan, as well as recruiting and training subordinate staff. He/she will have full accountability for fiscal, human resources, space and other administrative management responsibilities as related to the BBCIE.

The incumbent coordinates the advancement of the University’s standing as a leading global institution in the translation of academic research into entrepreneurial opportunities and to advance the use of University knowledge towards the generation of companies, jobs and prosperity in Canada.

Qualifications:

(MINIMUM)

EDUCATION:

Post graduate degree in science, engineering and/or business, or the equivalent acceptable combination of education and experience.

EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in working within an academic, government and/or industry setting with related experience in accessing and implementing various funding programs which promote innovation, student entrepreneurship and-or research commercialization including company creation, early-stage financing, venture capital; Experience in a senior administrative role managing a complex organization preferably in a University environment. Demonstrated experience in financial management. Demonstrated effectiveness in managing unionized staff, in-depth knowledge of HR policies and practices.

SKILLS:

Proven ability assessing opportunities in a variety of science and technical disciplines. Excellent research, analytical, negotiation, entrepreneurial, organizational and interpersonal skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Creative problem solving. Mentorship abilities.

OTHER:

Makes decisions regarding application of University policies, allocates own time, must be persuasive and diplomatic both inside and outside the University, must be able to balance conflicting demands on time.
