“It is the focus on collaboration that makes MaRS special,” says Jack Petch QC, counsel at Osler, Hoskin Harcourt LLP and MaRS donor. Jack has had the opportunity to see science, technology, and research first hand as Past Chair of St. Michael’s Hospital and now in his role as Chair of the University of Toronto’s Governing Council. “I see all of this world-class research happening in this city, MaRS provides the infrastructure for entrepreneurs to turn that research into a business.”

The MaRS mission—helping build successful companies from Canadian innovation—came to life for Jack when he attended an event at the home of MaRS CEO Ilse Treurnicht. “I heard the passion and enthusiasm coming directly from the entrepreneurs—how MaRS had helped them as they developed their business. I learned how people were working together on these new enterprises and the level of personal support they received.”

When asked about his decision to support MaRS, Jack said that a strong MaRS benefits all and helps in its continued evolution. He feels it also encourages the important relationship between MaRS and the University of Toronto. “MaRS is the place to invest for the future,” he says. “This is where it is happening. We need to bring in more opportunity, encourage job conversion and create new businesses.”

Jack also has great respect for the entrepreneur. “There is a real genius in that kind of creativity and it is a gift.” He is encouraging in his advice and says, “It’s not easy but MaRS is there to help you.”
