As an organization grows, be it a commercial venture, a non-profit organization or a social enterprise, an operating team with skills and knowledge needs to be brought on board. Whether they are paid staff or volunteers, this team needs to “buy in” to the aspirations of the organization and assist in every way they can, within their capacity. And the organization’s leader will want to ensure that what he or she is doing is worthwhile, that their management style is fair and that the organization creates value and stays within the limits of applicable laws. Like any team member, the leader will need guidance and support to do their work. When the time is right, the venture will need some form of a board of governors, directors or advisors to provide this oversight and advice.
The guide below is entitled Establishing Governance: A start-up guide for new businesses and non-profit organizations. It is designed to help entrepreneurs create their first board, keeping in mind the venture’s goals and the interests of its stakeholders and the broader marketplace. Covering a range of issues from board duties to recruitment to remuneration, this guide details the many aspects of governance that apply as an organization grows and becomes more complex.
