On November 12th, 2012, the Institute for Optical Sciences (IOS) is hosting an afternoon symposium titled ‘The UofT Student as Inventor and Entrepreneur.’ This event will launch TechnoLABS, located in the Banting & Best Centre for Innovation & Entrepreneurship, and will feature stories from UofT alumni who have led successful technology-based companies that improve our quality of life.

Speakers for the event include Tony Redpath (MaRS advisor and former CEO of Eco-Plastics), Graeme Ferguson (co-founder of IMAX), Vaugn Betz (founder of Right Track CAD, which was acquired by Altera), Neil Reid (co-founder of Sciex, which was acquired by MDS Inc), and Darren Anderson (co-founder and CTO of Vive Crop Protection).

The event will also highlight current and upcoming initiatives at the University that help current students follow in the footsteps of the speakers. TechnoLABS is part of a growing ecosystem of support and training programs at the University of Toronto for student and recent alumni entrepreneurs building companies based on technological innovations in a wide range of physical sciences. The space provides access to chemical, electrical, and other laboratory equipment for prototype development as well as work and meeting areas for student and alumni companies.

Students participating in TechnoLABS will present their companies at a poster session before the formal presentations and during the break.

Schedule and registration information can be found here.
