How Digital Tools are Transforming the Way We Do Science

MaRS Centre, CR-3
101 College Street
Toronto, ON
Modern consumers use a plethora of digital resources to make decisions. From booking hotels, to choosing restaurants or the next hot gadget, we have access to the experience of thousands of other users to help us make a sound choice. But when we put on our labcoats, too often we lower our standards and expectations when it comes to product sourcing for science, relying on guesswork and limited past experience.
Why do we spend more time searching for the best $100/night hotel than we do for a $400 antibody or $1000 kit – especially given the huge implications they can have for our professional success? Why do we not demand the same degree of third party evaluation for our scientific products, relying instead on the word of manufacturers?
All that’s about to change. The world is shifting, as more and more tools are cropping up that change the way we do science. More effective product sourcing, easy-to-use lab management tools, better ways to transfer and share data, new ways to keep up with publications and news – the rise of digital tools in science is making the process at the bench more efficient and effective. And many of them are free.
Alex will be sharing her experience building 1DegreeBio, some of the hottest new digital tools for science, and how the research community needs to change the way it supports digital tools within its institutions and labs.
