Ontario Institute for Cancer Research

The Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) is a centre of excellence that is moving the province to the forefront of discovery and innovation in cancer research. In its first five years, OICR has distinguished itself by taking on significant challenges in cancer research with multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional teams to tackle the incidence, diagnosis, management, and morbidity and mortality of cancer. OICR has invested significantly in translational research that will move new discoveries in prevention, detection and treatment of cancer directly from the bench to practical applications in patients.

OICR has 230 scientific staff as well as more than 1,200 clinicians, researchers, technicians and trainees located at its headquarters at the MaRS Centre, research institutes and academia across the Province of Ontario. OICR’s operating budget in 2011-2012 is over $110 million. It has key research efforts underway in small molecules, biologics, stem cells, imaging, genomics, informatics and bio-computing, from early stage research to Phase III clinical trials. OICRÂąs Intellectual Property Development and Commercialization Fund has made more than 15 investments to advance Ontario discoveries to market and create high-value jobs.
