Turning Trash into Money: Cleantech in Canada Seminar Series

Toronto, February 16, 2011 – Cleantech industry leaders Deloitte and Ogilvy Renault, along with MaRS Discovery District, hosted the latest in the Cleantech in Canada seminar series today at MaRS Centre. Industry experts shared their thoughts on key emerging opportunities for cleantech entrepreneurs, investors and government in waste management.

“According to recent studies, Canada produces more waste per capita than any of its peers in the developed world,” says Sid Paquette, Deloitte’s GTA/SWO Clean Technology Leader. “Corporations and municipalities spend billions each year on disposing of by-products and waste. This is creating many opportunities for companies that can provide cost-effective, efficient and sustainable solutions.”

The Cleantech in Canada panel was moderated by Richard Sutin, Co-Chair, Cleantech Practice at Ogilvy Renault. Panellists included:

  • Mark Montemurro, CEO, Alter NRG Corporation
  • Geoff Rathbone, General Manager, Solid Waste Management Services, City of Toronto
  • Pushkar Kumar, Founder & CEO, GreenMantra Recycling Technologies Ltd.
  • Alan Evans, Partner, Enviropure Systems

“Trash has never been so lucrative, whether it’s through recycling, safe disposal or generating energy from waste,” says Sutin. “It’s also an area that can create wins both for the environment and economically—with less waste and more business for cleantech companies.”

“At MaRS, we work with dozens of companies that have the potential to change the world. GreenMantra is one of these companies—its technology turns plastic bags and other plastic wastes into high-quality waxes, greases and lubricating oils,” says MaRS CEO Ilse Treurnicht. “Innovative thinking like this will eventually lead to a shift in the way we see waste—not as garbage, but as opportunity.”
