Scott Hughes is the Director of Community Business Banking at Vancity Credit Union. In this role, Scott leads a team of practitioners who provide a range of financial services and tools to not-for-profits, social enterprises and cooperatives, as well as to traditionally underbanked communities. Scott brings a rare combination of skills and experience to this work: he has spent sixteen years in commercial banking (in both banks and credit unions) learning the tools of finance, has traveled extensively in the developing world, and has a passion for community economic development. His work at Vancity helps leverage traditional financial instruments for organizations to better meet their missions, and challenges other financial institutions to consider blended value returns. Scott has contributed to the discussion about the social economy, social finance and the value of a strong civil society in Canada and has been a sponsoring convener of the annual Social Venture Institute for the past few years.
