Dr. Samuel Weiss Ph.D.
Director, the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, University of Calgary.
As a postdoctoral fellow at the centre de Pharmacologie-Endocrinologie, Montpellier, France, he discovered the metabotropic glutamate receptor, now a target for pharmaceutical research and development for neurological disease therapies. He discovered neural stem cells in the brains of adult mammals (1992). His current research focuses on the cellular, molecular and in vivo biology of neural precursors and on the direct regulation of intrinsic adult neural stem cells and functional recovery in animal models of brain and spinal cord injury or disease. His current focus is to translate innovative research into advances in neurological healthcare. He received a Canada Gairdner International Award in 2008.
