Dr. Shinya Yamanaka M.D., Ph.D.
Director, Center for Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell Research and Application, Kyoto University and Visiting Scientist, Gladstone Institute for Cardiovascular Disease, San Francisco.
As a postdoctoral fellow at the Gladstone Institute (1993-96), Dr. Yamanaka discovered NAT1, later recognized as an indispensable gene in ES cell differentiation. He returned to Osaka City University Medical School in 1996 and was appointed to the Nara Institute of Science and Technology in 1999, where he established the technology for preparing induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells). He is currently conducting iPS cell research in regenerative medicine. He is a 2009 recipient of a Canada Gairdner Award.
