Protein homeostasis in health and disease
Dr. Peter Walter Ph.D.
Professor and Chairman, Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, University of California, San Francisco.
Dr. Walter identified the six proteins and the RNA that make up the signal recognition particle. He has been exploring the causes and signaling pathways involved in endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, which arises when protein folding machinery in the ER lumen is overwhelmed by excess protein synthesis. The responses to ER stress are so crucial to cells that imbalances can lead to a number of diseases. He is a 2009 recipient of a Canada Gairdner International Award.
