You Can Make Gold and Other Myths about Innovation
One of the reasons that we so often fail in trying to innovate is that we believe much of the nonsense that is stated as “obvious” and “truth” about the subject. Perhaps the most repressive is the myth of the genius inventor which is perpetuated by our obsessive need for super heroes – be it in sport, art, business, science, etc. Get over it. Edison did not invent most of the stuff that he is credited with. He was an amazing person, for sure, but he was as much, if not more, the Simon Cowell of his day than the Peter Gabriel. He and his lawyers. Until we dive deeper and try to understand what was really behind past success and failure, we are more likely to base our decisions on myth than data – to the ultimate loss of us all.
