Position Overview

ChipCare is developing one of the most versatile point-of-care diagnostics platforms in the world, which will enable an unparalleled sample-to-action workflow in the clinic. Our polyvalent analyzer (PAx) utilizes a patented approach to analyte detection that can perform multiple key assay classes including cell surface markers, proteins and nucleic acids. Using small volumes of patient blood or urine samples, health workers in doctors’ offices and remote health locations will be able to rapidly and accurately perform tests to diagnose or monitor a range of infectious and non-communicable diseases. The company is currently focused on the development and launch of multiplex molecular and immunoassays targeting the Women’s health and STI markets.

Department: Systems integration

This project entails working with the Systems R&D Engineering team to complete the design, build and characterization of ChipCare’s next generation polyvalent analyzer and fluidic cartridges

Working as part of System Integration team you will:

  • Assemble, test, and debug prototype consumable designs
  • Design experiments to probe fluidic function of consumable prototypes
  • Improve consumable device assembly processes and procedures
  • Document results, including the writing of technical reports
  • Propose, develop and test design improvements for ChipCare consumable prototypes

Other tasks may be assigned as required.

Note this position may require periodically working with Class 3B or Class 4 lasers and as such will require participation in ChipCare’s Laser radiation medical surveillance program including a pre-assignment baseline optometric examination (administered by a qualified third party). The position may also require working in ChipCare’s biological containment level 2 facility from time to time, under supervision.

ChipCare has a small, highly skilled, collaborative and energized team of ~25 engineers, technologists and scientists working together in a complex co-development project. You will be; working in a fast-paced product development environment, managing relevant project sub tasks within overall project (including task planning, scheduling and reporting), getting hands-on experience in prototype design, build and characterization. Through this project you will build knowledge and experience related to integration of hardware and biochemical assays, develop excellent teamwork and communication skills and contribute to the development of a new platform.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • demonstrated ability to carry out device testing, characterization and analysis
  • experience with basic mechanical design principles
  • experience with basic fluidic design principles
  • experience working with biological and chemical samples
  • strong statistical analysis skills, familiarity with design of experiments (DOE) methodology is an asset
  • demonstrated research skills including literature reviews, laboratory-based research, reporting, data synthesis and analysis
  • experience with design software, eg. Solidworks is an asset
  • familiarity with IVD’s, microfluidics, diagnostic assays is an asset
  • excellent communication, research and documentation skills
  • excellent organizational and time management skills, ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • ability to work in teams and demonstrate flexibility in task assignments etc in order to ensure project success
  • demonstrated familiarity with Laboratory health and safety practices
  • ability to work flexible hours/schedule as required by the project

Area and Level of Study:
Partial undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering, Engineering Science/Physics, Systems Engineering (or a related field)
