Position Role: Engineering

Position Level: Internship

Position Type: Contract

Position Location: Toronto

Application Deadline: 2018-03-29

Position Overview:

This position is offered in part by the MaRS Student Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) Program, which connects post-secondary students with work placements in technology and business.

Did you know that 25% of mobile devices are contaminated with pathogenic bacteria? Did you know that when these types of pathogens are spread and exposed to those with weakened immune systems the consequences could be fatal? That hospital-acquired infections are causing hundreds of thousands of patients to extend their stay in hospitals, and adding millions of dollars in financial burden on our healthcare system each year?

Our mission is simple: eliminate pathogens on mobile devices through the use of effective and easy-to-use UV products. We do this by designing technologies that people will actually use, backed by science reflective of real-world conditions. We harness the power of UV light to kill the most dangerous pathogens without damaging expensive touch screens.

Our flagship product, the CleanSlate, is used in healthcare to sanitize mobile devices – whether that is phones, tablets, pagers, watches, badges, etc. Ultimately, our goal is to prevent the spread of infections and improve patient outcomes.

What can students expect in the workplace?

Every team member at CleanSlate UV has one thing in common: a relentless drive to refine, improve and learn. We work at a fast pace and are flexible to the start-up company’s changing demands. Our team is small and works as a collaborative unit. We encourage transparent communication, from the top down. You will be exposed to scenarios you would rarely experience within a large corporation (especially at this stage in your career). You will have an opportunity to work on tasks in a multitude of positions within different departments. Our team is actively mentoring several students and professionals; you will benefit from our coaching sessions and we can provide the best possible learning experience, preparing you for the next step of your career. We actively encourage (and at times, mandate) our students to attend networking events and technical seminars to broaden their knowledge and reach within the industry.

Project Description:

We’re looking for a mechatronics engineering-based candidate who can help us pave the future with new product development, intended for public use. Our goal is to create products that share our same mission statement, but that are available to a larger audience, and that can sanitize more devices. This way, we can strengthen our front against the spread of pathogens. New products go hand-in-hand with the need for more creative ideas and brainstorming; hence, we’re turning to you for help. We’re looking for fresh eyes and eager hands to help us expand and meet our product team goals.

Role Description:

The tasks associated with this position range from generating concepts & engineering design to prototype development, assembly and validation. We want you to be the project leader, own your action items, and drive the team to meet objectives.

The main responsibilities of this position will include:

  • Generating several concepts, organizing brainstorming sessions and selection of concepts
  • Create 3D models of chosen concept leading to complete engineering design
  • Component and material selections, sourcing and supplier management
  • Fabricating prototype parts and working with external vendors
  • Component quality check, assembly and validations – key inputs for design iterations
  • Assist in developing models with Light Simulation tool (TracePro Software)
  • Engineering project management activities
  • Engineering documentations such as test reports, weekly engineering reports
  • Participate in user studies and pilot studies in hospitals

Minimum qualifications:

The minimum requirements for this position are that the student must be an undergraduate studying a discipline of engineering.

Experience in an engineering-related role, particularly related to design, is an asset but not required.

Technical Skills:

Apart from crucial soft skills, we’re hoping for some technical abilities as well:

  • Adept problem-solving skills
  • CAD and design experience is an asset (we use SolidWorks)
  • Hands-on experience with electronics, PCB design and firmware coding with C++ is an asset

Soft Skills:

As a member of a fast-paced and growing start-up, you will be treated as integral part of our core team, given significant input towards product development and will be depended upon to deliver output. We’re looking for candidates that are innovative and eager to define unknown systems from the ground up. You must be able to communicate well and work collaboratively in a team-driven environment. You will need to be adaptable and flexible. We are working to find a product-market-fit, meaning our team needs to respond quickly to changing priorities.
