DNA art: the perfect Vday gift for science nerds

Whenever I see something that stimulates both the left and right sides of my brain simultaneously, I can’t help but get excited. Ottawa-based DNA 11 is where art and science converge to bring custom portraits of your DNA fingerprint to your living room. It’s the perfect Valentine’s Day gift for the science nerd in your life!

Entrepreneurs Adrian Salamunovic and Nazim Ahmed are on the rise and gaining recognition internationally with their contemporary spin on the self-portrait. With the emergence of the yupster and consumer trends leaning towards mass-customization, this company is on the mark. In the last year, their artwork has been being featured on CSI: NY, the Today Show, Daily Planet, HGTV, a number of publications, and are available through MoMA design stores in New York and Japan. I caught them most recently on CBC News Morning.

How does it work? Their online ordering system is incredibly straightforward. After picking your colour scheme, framing etc., you get a swanky swab kit in the mail to get collect your sample. Send it in, and a little while later you receive your highly personalized artwork. If you aren’t too crazy about hanging your DNA on the wall, they also do fingerprints and lipstick kisses. And if you are looking for a way to commemorate dear Fluffy, they also do pets!
