What if there were a place that encouraged social investment, innovation and collaboration? Welcome to Ontario’s Social Venture Registry.
“Social ventures” are both not-for-profit social enterprises and for-profit social-purpose businesses, since solutions to social problems are emerging in both sectors.
Still not sure about what constitutes a social venture or need help describing your organization’s mission, benefit, product or service? We’ve profiled eight social ventures, including a mix of for-profit and not-for-profit organizations who operate in the following six sectors:

Provide a new online fundraising platform for charities.
Revenue share of advertising, licence fees for software and professional services.
Allow citizens without the financial resources to raise money for their charity by interacting with corporate cause marketing messages while they surf the web. Provide a social media platform for companies to promote their social programs to citizens who are aligned to their cause. Provide a social media platform for charities to raise awareness and engage with citizens who care about their cause.
To help more families own their homes and build/establish a financial foundation for their future.
Burton Hicks, locates and purchases under-valued starter homes and then using private funding, provides an innovative financing model for purchasers. The financing is designed so that the purchaser can transition to a regular bank mortgage on the property.
Access to home ownership for those who would not qualify for assistance with traditional lenders. Their unique home-owner partnership model has proven an effective way for seniors to own homes and create inter-generational housing for their families.
Eva’s Initiatives serve homeless and at-risk youth and are focused on long-term solutions to break the cycle of youth homelessness. The Phoenix Print Shop provides an effective training site for youth in employment and training programs and generates revenue for Eva’s Initiatives, including the three shelters located in Toronto
Phoenix Print Shop offers design, offset and digital printing, finishing (collating, folding, shrink-wrapping) and delivery to large corporate clients, government and non-profit customers.
The program has demonstrated success with participants – over 50% of the graduates of the program, improved their housing situation and 73% moved on to full-time jobs or returned to school. Phoenix Print Shop has a triple-bottom line, powered by green energy and was certified by Forestry Stewardship Counsel in support of their environmental commitment
Grassroots offers environmentally-friendly products that allow its customers to make positive choices for themselves, their communities and the planet.
Grassroots Store is Canada’s largest green lifestyle retailer. They operate two store-fronts in Toronto and an on-line store which offers a wide range of products including personal care, household, gardening, alternative power and office products.
Grassroots carefully sources and investigates products that meet or exceed environmental standards, respecting and observing fair trade, fair labour, and human rights practices, ensuring social benefits are also generated on each product sale.
The now world-wide Habitat for Humanity (HFH) program is based on “partnership housing” where those in need of adequate shelter work side by side with volunteers to build simple, decent and affordable houses. ReStore proceeds support HFH’s social mission.
Habitat ReStores sell quality, used and new surplus building materials at a fraction of normal prices. There are 56 ReStores in Canada and over 30 operating in Ontario.
Habitat Canada has helped over 1,400 families move into affordable homes. ReStores works as a triple-bottom line entity, providing financial and social benefits, but also helping with the environment by re-channeling, good usable materials into use, rather than into a local landfill.
Help children unlock their potential through academic success in mathematics by supporting educational and community networks with resources, research and support to ensure those with disabilities or vulnerable or at-risk have access to the program.
Sale of student workbooks and teacher’s manuals, used by parents and teachers to develop, expand and improve the program.
The JUMP Math program has strong support for teachers and tutors with respect to results achieved in the field with students. Early results from a study undertaken by Ontario Institute for Studies in Education indicate better outcomes for children in the program
Serve isolated populations like seniors by enabling them to connect with family/friends on the Internet with easy-to-use applications.
Sale of software licenses to assisted-living facilities (retirement, nursing and community centres) and to users living in own homes.
Research by Minister of Health and Long Term Care shows that interventions to treat or reduce risk of social isolation can improve health outcomes in the community-dwelling elderly. PointerWare’s customers confirm the product’s ability to reduce isolation for the end-user as well as providing family members higher peace-of-mind given the more frequent communication.
To offer subsized or no-cost community mediation services to charities and non-profits, groups and individuals who face financial barriers to accessing professional mediation services.
Provide professional mediation, facilitation, public and customized training courses and consulting services to individuals, businesses and organizations on a fee for service basis, based on St. Stephen’s expertise in Alternative Dispute Resolution.
For over 20 years, the community mediation program has helped resolve various forms of conflict among the St. Stephen’s area residents who come from diverse cultural, economic, religious and social groups, helping to prevent and solve social problems and develop harmonious relationships within the St. Stephen’s community.

Home Ownership Alternatives is a non-profit financial corporation dedicated to making home ownership possible for low and moderate income families.
Income generating product/service
HOA Support for Developers of Affordable Housing
HOA makes early stage investments in developments of new affordable homes with two forms of project financing.
First, HOA lends its development partners early-stage funding to assist with feasibility studies and land acquisition. Second, when developments proceed, HOA provides the financial guarantees needed to arrange construction financing. HOA is preaid this investment at closing and earns a modest interest rate.
HOA also provides 2nd mortgages that help buyers by reducing the amount of their down payments and the level of income needed to purchase a first home.
Our basic 2nd mortgage is the difference between the units cost and its market value. For buyers needing extra help, the second mortgage can be increased with additional funds from HOA, governments and other partners.
Homeowners pay no principal or interest on the second mortgage until they sell the home. (They can also pay out the second mortgage at any time they choose.)
When homeowners no longer need assistance (due to resale of the home or voluntary repayment) they pay out the mortgage plus a share of the increase in the value of the home. Repayment of the 2nd mortgage is another source of revenue for HOA. HOA then reinvests these funds into new affordable homes for new buyers.
Social/Environmental benefit
Since our creation 10 years ago, HOA has helped more than 2,300 families buy a home. In our recent developments in the GTA, 75% of homebuyers had household incomes below $60,000.
We support families not units. We do not attach subsidies to specific units. Instead we use 2nd mortgages to capture the value created through development, enabling perpetual reinvestment of the funds (as repaid) to support ever more homebuyers.

Knowledge work, a knowledge society…all leverage information and communication technologies. The need for inclusive design measures has been confirmed as vital by provincial, state and federal governments, who are establishing legislation on how we do business, teach and interact through digital mediums. In Ontario, the proposed AODA Information and Communications Standard will require business, government and education sectors to provide media accessibility on their websites.
Educational institutions already have obligations to provide students with a a fully accessible curriculum, including access to media.
Business shouldn’t leave customers without access to web media. They must come to meet the various accessibility requirements and standards locally, federally and internationally.
Even government agencies must keep accountable to the diverse needs of their communities, and keeping websites accessible is required by the Canadian Government’s Common Look and Feel Standards.

Serves to improve the quality of living and the independence for our aging population and those with mild to moderate symptoms of Alzheimer’s, eating disorders, ADHA and those who are hearing impaired etc. while still living at home, reducing hospital stays, the costs to the health care system and giving the patient and the patient’s family the send that someone cares.
Research has shown that with even as little as 15 minutes a day on a computer, the brain power of our aging population and those with mild to moderate dementia increases dramatically while using the computer. Research has also shown that by reducing social isolation (by the end-user), by interacting with their peers over the internet as well as providing the ability for more everyday communications such as planning events with family etc., can improve health results for the aging population living alone at home and even those living in institutions.
With the ability of medical practitioners and caregivers to monitor the vital signs of their patients remotely, these features can dramatically reduce the need for hospital stays and costs to our health system. Our systems self monitors the patient’s vital signs and would have the capability to automatically call for assistance if there indications of a problem.

Traffic marketing + design inc., an award-winning Toronto-based communications company committed to sustainable business practices, has launched The World’s Greenest Business Card. By “greening” the smallest and most widely-used marketing material – the standard business card, a company can make a good green first impression and demonstrate it’s commitment to sustainability.

The World’s Greenest Business Card – the MOST ethically, and socially responsibly produced business card. Manufactured on 100% post-consumer waste recycled paper (means no new trees harvested). Paper manufactured in Canada (small carbon footprint) FSC and EcoLogo certified stock means you can have the FSC logo printed on your card if you would like; printed waterless with low impact vegetable inks. We plant a tree with Trees Ontario for every order.
Social/Environmental benefit
Producing a business card with The World’s Greenest Business Card on 100% post-consumer waste recycled paper saves significant resources including (on average) two trees per run, and reduces the amount of water, solid waste and emissions. Full details online at: http://www.trafficdesign.ca/faq.html
In addition, if you are a green company or are marketing a sustainable product or service, you know that your credibility is essential to your green corporate message. A study by Edelman Public Relations found that 39% of the respondents said they were more likely to purchase the product of a company they perceive to be socially and environmentally responsible, and 80% said they would boycott a company they perceived as being irresponsible in that regard.
