Green IT on the rise: MaRS tenant Skymeter Corp. named one of Top Ten Green IT Companies to Watch

Toronto, March 24, 2009 – Market research leader IDC Canada has featured Skymeter Corp. – a MaRS tenant and advisory services client – as one of its “Ten Canadian Green IT Companies to Watch” for 2009.

Skymeter has developed a GPS smart-metering system – housed in a small unit that sits on a car’s dashboard – which can be used for accurate pay-as-you-go pricing in road tolling, parking, insurance and more.

Last fall, Skymeter announced a partnership with global networking giant Cisco Systems to demonstrate Skymeter’s technology in a Seoul, Korea pilot project. As well, a recent report from the U.S. National Surface Transport Infrastructure Financing Commission recommends that the transition from fuel taxes to a system where roads are financed by drivers’ actual use of roads, particularly through the use of satellite GPS technology.

“Skymeter is proving itself to be the solution of choice for pay-as-you-go technology with wide applications,” said MaRS Advisor Peter Evans, who has worked with the company on business strategy in recent years. “With successful traffic congestion trials in Asia, the recent U.S. commission report and now a Top 10 rating from IDC, this momentum is a testament to the hard work Skymeter has done in getting their technology in front of the right people.”

Evans is a member of the MaRS Business Advisory Services group, which works directly with hundreds of science, technology and social entrepreneurs across the province: 45% of their clients are developing products and services in information and communication technology.
