Skymeter scoops up top prize at international traffic awards

The Intertraffic Innovation Awards are the traffic industry’s most important prizes—at the 20th annual Intertraffic Amsterdam conference on March 22-24, 2010, judges awarded the top prize to Skymeter Corp., a Canadian company, MaRS incubator tenant and client of MaRS advisory services. Skymeter received the ITS/Traffic Management Award and was recognized as the competition’s Overall Winner.

Skymeter’s innovative GNSS-based smart road use meter addresses and overcomes the issue of urban canyons and disseminates GPS data in a unique way, creating a system that is far more accurate than traditional GPS systems. Contest judges were impressed with the broad applications of Skymeter’s system: it’s GPS-based financial grade meter is designed for a variety of traffic-related applications, including road use charges, pay-as-you-drive insurance and parking.
The jury believed that Skymeter’s technology has the potential to change the way we think about paying for driving, parking and traffic. It’s this way-of-the-future attitude that helped edge Skymeter ahead of the competition (according to Intertraffic Amsterdam, judges had the hardest time choosing the winner in the ITS/Traffic Management category). 86 technologies were initially submitted to the competition—a shortlist of 17 exhibited at Intertraffic Amsterdam and six received awards on March 23 in categories such as Parking, Environment and Cooperative Systems.
Skymeter’s successes are adding up. The Intertraffic Innovation Award is it’s first big win in 2010, but in 2009, Skymeter was named the Top Cleantech company at the CIX Innovation Exchange and one of the 10 Canadian Green IT Companies to Watch by IDC Canada. It also received equity investment from the Investment Accelerator Fund.
Congratulations Skymeter!
