The holiday season hasn’t slowed down events in Toronto’s tech community. With debates, workshops and even a charity poker tournament, there’s something for everyone.

Here are our top picks for Toronto tech events this December:

1. A debate for the fintech community

Are Canadians ready for the open banking movement? An upcoming breakfast event at MaRS will feature a lively debate on the pros and cons of consumer-directed banking. A pillar of the open banking movement, consumer-directed banking allows customers to direct their bank to share information with entities of the customer’s choosing, such as fintech startups, insurance companies and other banks. A panel, including leaders from KOHO, Borrowell and Accenture, will debate the pros and cons. December 12, MaRS Discovery District.

2. A workshop for corporate innovators

For corporate employees looking to foster a culture of innovation within their organization, the MaRS Partnerships Corporate Innovation Training series provides interactive and experiential learning opportunities. This month’s session focuses on creating sustainable business models for products and process improvements. Learn the basics and how to apply them when designing new business models and pitching them to executive leadership. December 11, MaRS Discovery District.

3. Network with the tech community

Meet and learn from Toronto’s technology leaders and innovators at the monthly TechTO meetup, where innovators share their expertise through five-minute TED talk-style presentations. This month’s edition features speakers from Canada Learning Code, OMX and more. December 9, RBC Waterpark Place.

4. A charity poker tournament

Toronto tech founders, investors, influencers and other members of the innovation community will play for their favourite charities at the annual OMERS Ventures Charity Poker Tournament & Winter Social.
