Federal Budget 2025: Building Canada Strong
This week’s federal budget announcement marks an important step forward for Canadian innovation.
At MaRS, we believe in the power of human ingenuity to address the most complex challenges facing Canadians today and to shape our future. The priorities outlined in this budget, strategic procurement, early-stage scale support and dual-use technology commercialization, directly address gaps we’ve been working on and advocating for with our partners in government and industry.
We are looking forward to working with our partners to enable Canadian innovation to scale. A few elements of this budget are particularly important:
- The federal government’s commitment to be an early customer will de-risk private capital and support the commercialization of early-stage science and technologies. This is a critical and practical measure that helps Canadian companies move from proven technology to commercial success here at home.
- In his budget speech, Minister Champagne noted that Canadians are feeling the current economic challenges. MaRS companies and entrepreneurs are built to address the challenges facing their communities. They are natural problem solvers. Helping them scale their solutions is critical to improving people’s lives and enabling economic growth.
- The focus on defence also provides an opportunity for dual-use technologies, born from Canadian science, to support Canada’s national security. Companies like MaRS-affiliated GHGSat are providing cutting-edge technology for the security of Canada’s North.
At MaRS, we’ve built 25 years of infrastructure to connect researchers, founders, capital and customers. We see every day what’s possible when those pieces align and what’s lost when they don’t.
The companies are ready. The technologies exist. The opportunity is real. Many are already working with us to navigate growth, access talent and connect with the right partners.
The question isn’t whether Canada can compete. It’s whether we’ll move with the speed and conviction the moment requires.
I’m optimistic. This budget creates the conditions for Canadian ingenuity to thrive. Now it’s on all of us, government, investors, corporations and innovation organizations, to deliver on that potential.
