Health Canada approves The Canary System™

Quantum Dental Technology’s system identifies and monitors tooth decay without the need for dental x-rays

Toronto, May 6, 2011 – The MaRS Discovery District is pleased to announce that Health Canada has approved technology from MaRS client Quantum Dental Technologies for sale in Canada.

The Canary System™ is a low-powered laser-based device that uses a novel combination of heat and light to directly examine the crystal structure of teeth and map areas of tooth decay. It can detect, map and monitor carious lesions on any tooth surface earlier and more accurately than ever before.

“We will be open for business at the ODA Show April 28-30,” announced Lisa Crossley, CEO of The Canary System’s manufacturer, Quantum Dental Technologies (QDT). The Ontario Dental Association (ODA) is Ontario’s voluntary professional dental association.

“We’ve been contacted by many dental professionals wanting to know when The Canary System would be available for sale, and now that we have Health Canada’s approval, we are looking forward to getting The Canary System into dental offices across Canada,” said President and Founder of QDT, Dr. Stephen Abrams, DDS.

“We invite dentists, hygienists and attendees to visit us at Booth #1640 at the ODA Spring Meeting in Toronto,” he said. “Come see The Canary System in action and learn how this powerful tool can change the way you detect and treat caries.”

The Canary System™ can:
1.    Identify and monitor tooth decay without the need for dental x-rays;
2.    Detect decay on all tooth surfaces including between teeth;
3.    Detect decay in between teeth at an earlier stage than the traditional dental x-ray;
4.    Detect decay as small as 50 microns (20 times smaller than a millimeter);
5.    Examine teeth for decay as deep as 5 millimeters below the tooth surface;
6.    Offer a safe, non-invasive, painless and quick experience.

The Canary System’s interactive software and printed patient reports engage patients in their own oral healthcare like never before.
