The top online tech events this September

The future of work, demo days and a competition to suss out fake news — these are the can’t-miss events of September.

While the tech community won’t be gathering in person anytime soon, it doesn’t mean we won’t stay connected.

From the massive Collision online conference to frequent TechTO meetups and broadcasts from the Innovation Economy Council, the last few months have shown how innovative our community can be — even during a pandemic. This fall’s event season shows no shortage of insights and entertainment for the tech world, with many events highlighting the amazing work being done by Canadian startups.

Here are our top picks for online tech events this September:

A conversation with visionary cleantech entrepreneurs

Anyone interested in cleantech can’t miss the next MaRS Mornings featuring six remarkable women solving the world’s most daunting environmental challenges. A startup showcase and discussion with Lance Armstrong

When the pandemic hit, TechStars had to shift its accelerator program entirely online. With in-person events still limited, that means its demo day is going virtual for the first time. Its class of diverse founders from the Middle East, Africa, Eastern Europe and all across Canada will pitch their companies and discuss how their startups will change the future. Plus, Janet Bannister of Real Ventures will interview cycling legend Lance Armstrong about his investor journey. Lance was an early investor in Uber and currently leads the investment firm Next Ventures. September 3, online

What will work look like in 2030? In this discussion with Communitech and the Brookfield Institute for Innovation + Entrepreneurship at Ryerson University, we’ll hear the latest research on trends that may affect the Canadian labour market, such as automation and climate change. Brookfield will also share which occupations and industries are projected to grow, what foundational skills are needed for the next decade, and insights as to how to best navigate the future of work. September 9, online

A demo day for insurance startups

Fintech startups are revolutionizing the insurance industry, from AI that can detect fraudulent activity to platforms that digitize insurance products. At the next MaRS Fintech Solutions Demo Day, you’ll hear from the startups changing the landscape and learn about the latest insurance trends. Interested businesses can also request virtual B2B meetings with the pitching companies. September 30, online

An award for startups solving fake news

Social media hoaxes, conspiracy theories, clickbait posted on shady websites — fake news is everywhere. It can jeopardize democracy by influencing elections and harm people’s health by spreading misinformation during a global pandemic. To combat the fake news problem, Communitech’s $1 million Leaders Prize competition asked companies to use artificial intelligence to automate fact-checking. Tune in to see who takes home the $1 million prize. September 10, online
