Innoweave: Explore and Experiment
Building Capacity for Social Innovation Labs across Canada
Organisations across the country are tackling a variety of society’s most complex problems, from addressing chronic disease to community policing to reducing rural domestic abuse. Working on complex problems requires a particular set of tools to increase creative and experimental thought, co-design solutions with users, and test assumptions and prototypes. The Innoweave Explore and Experiment Module was created to build capacity for these social innovation tools within emergent lab teams, across Canadian organisations.
In partnership with the McConnell Foundation, MaRS Solutions Lab developed a training module, Explore and Experiment, to support lab teams tackling complex social problems. The program ran from January to June 2017 with 16 teams from across the country. It involved a series of 10 virtual workshops, each with presentations on the lab process, a case study delivered by a Canadian expert, exercises and assignments, and was accompanied by a workbook created for the program. One-on-one coaching was also offered to the teams throughout the program.
The Explore and Experiment training has enabled the participating teams to progress in the lab life cycle. Two of the teams are launching labs in 2018, two of the early-stage labs are testing the waters, and two of the more established labs are deepening their practice. We are also moving forward with follow-up coaching for three of the teams, to continue supporting their learning.
